ROADS AND BRIDGES

Mastkrton district is recognised as one of the most prosperous in the Dominion. Ti is is due to its closer settlement and excellent roads and bridges—monuments to the energy and advocacy of Mr A. W. Hogg ex-M.P. In a letter to the Waverley Tribune Mr Hogg says : “The value and prosperity of a district depend largely on the character of its public works. One great ambition of my political life has been to see every part of the Dominion as well roaded and bridged as Mastertou, If this were done the value of our exports would be more than doubled. Unfortunately the urgent wants of our young settlers have lor many years been systematically ignored. Milof borrowed money have been spent on railways for which there is no pressing need, and on buildings that might well have been deferred, while energetic settlers through want of access to markets have been blocked and buried.” In conclusion Mr Hogg says if the Minister for Public Works will carry out his promise and alter the public works policy by giving railways and buildings a back seat on the estimates, his administration should command the general approval of the community.
