MOTOR CAR FALLS FROM A BRIDGE.

' NARROW ESCAPE OF OCCUPANTS. A peculiar accident occurred on the Awabuti bridge about !en o’clock yesterday morning. Mr Hansen, of Wellington, was driving his car, in which he had as a passenger, Mr Jones, ofTurakina, in the direction of Palmerston. He failed to notice until too late the nature of the repairing work in progress at the bridge, which had necessitated the construction of a light barrier across the abrupt end of the bridge and the construction of a temporary approach. He immediately applied the brakes, but the car crashed through the barrier and dropped about twelve feet on to a mortar board below, where, fortunately, nobody was working at the time. The occupants received a very nasty jolt, and Mr Jones had one arm severely cut by the broken glass from the windscreen. The car was naturally knocked about a good deal, the gearing being strained and the front axle badly bent. Messrs Dunk and Pringle were communicated with, and their mechanics were sent to the spot, and, after working on the damage all day, were able to effect sufficient temporary repairs to render it possible to drive the machine in to the garage in Palmerston, where it is now undergoing an overhaul.
