The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, January 4, 1913. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Thkre was a time wheu the Foxton Rowiug Club won fame through the prowess of its scullers. Old timers beam with pride when the successes of the Dolly Vardeu crew are resusitated. But its a far call since then and enthusiasm in sculling seems long since dead. Other forms of healthy recreation seem to have possessed our local young men. The Rowing Club is still in existence, but little or no interest is evinced by its members in competitive work. Apart from the pleasure boats the plant is obselele. Foxton posseses one of the finest stretches of water for sculling to be found in the Dominion, and we are not behind other places in the matter of young men physically fitted for sculling. When the world’s exchampion was in Foxton he expressed surprise that, with all the natural advantages, Foxton was not represented at the regattas. Mr Webb singled out a local man who, he said, should make a name for himself in the sculling world and he bad a chat with him. The man was McKeguey. We believe MeKeguey is willing to aspire for sculling honours and this can only be brought about with the assistance of the local Club. McKeguey has purchased a suitable skiff and the Club should now get into touch with this enthusiast and enter him for the next Wanganui regatta. This may revive interest in rowing and stimulate other of our young men to enter the sculling field.
