JETTY AT THE HEADS.

LETTER FROM THE MARINE DEPARTMENT.

Mr E. Holbeu, of Palmerston North, one of the promoters for a jetty at the heads, has received the following letter from the secretary of the Marine Department “I am to state that as Parliament has voted a sum of £35 to provide for tbe cost of the iron rails required in the construction of the wharf, the plan forwarded by you was submitted to the Marine Engineer, who states that he sees no objection to the construction being carried out in accordance with the i lan, but at the same time he considers that attention should A- drawn to the following points for the guidance of those who are carrying out the work : The double caps of each pier should be secured by two Jliiu. diameter bolts at each rail. The stringers should be secured to each cap with a A in. belt. The lower walling to support the steps should be secured by two /sin. bolts at each end. Double caps are wanted at the intermediate pier for supporting tbe upper end of the steps. The deck planks should be spiked with 4iu. round spikes. Hand rail posts should be 4iu. by 4in. tenoned into the deck plank and screw spiked. The deck stringers should be placed a little closer together so as their bolts shall not foul tbe bolts securing the double caps. lam informed by the secretary of the Foxton Harbour that that body will undertake the erection of the wharf on the necessary rails being supplied, and the plan has therefore been submitted to the Goveruor-iu Council for approval at the uext meeting of the Executive Council.”

Arrangements are being made to send the necessary rails to the Harbour Board at Foxton, and it is quite possible, therefore, that the residents of Te Wbarangi will have the privilege of seeing tbe work under way before many weeks have passed, and perhaps be able to make use of the jetty before the holiday season is over.
