WHITE AUSTRALIA.
Melbourne, Dec. The figures supplied by the Company show that the sugar business produces high profits. The commission opposed ihe nationalisation of the sugar industry aud the Commonwealth competing in existing concerns with a view to keeping down- the price of refined sugar while raising the price of raw. It recommends an amendment of the constitution to enable the Commonwealth to control the prices of raw sugar and sugar cane, aud that thereupon the price of raw sugar be fixed on a sliding scale by iuter-State commission, the price of the cane sugar to be fixed by a board for each mill. A minimum wage of Ss per eight-hour day and better conditions to* workers are recommended, also the retention of a rebate sugar duty on exported manufactured products, and a special excise of £2 per ton on beet sugar when the production exceeds 10,000 tons.
