AFFAIRS AT WAIHI.

POLICE HONOURED.

Waihi, Nnv. 30. The most successful ball yet held in Waihi came oil at the Academy Theatre last night, as a compliment to the police. Upwards of a thousand attended in appreciation of the service of the police to the community during the late troubles. The Mayor, on behalf of the citizens, Mr Donaldson, on behalf of various public bodies, and Mr Rudd, of the Workers’ Union, spoke in eulogistic terms of the conduct of the police, from Commissioner to rank and file, and complimented the Department of Justice on the splendid body of men mentally, morally and physically, who composed the staff. A grand march was then formed, in which about 500 took part. LETTER OF THANKS TO THE PREMIER. A list of 594 signatures, voluntarily subscribed by residents of Waihi and Waikino. has been sent to Mr Massey in expression of their gratitude for the Government having responded to their appeal for police protection during the strike. A letter covering the list says: “We all recognise that bad you not taken the firm stand you did our homes and families would have been left at the mercy of mobs of irresponsibles. The list represents all classes of the community of Waihi and Waikino, and it will be gratifying to you to know that the parly feeling has not entered into this matter, but that the desire of the people to give expression to their gratitude has prompted them to communicate with you.” Auckland, Nov. 30. In connection with the testimonial to the Premier for his prompt response to the appeal for police protection, it is stated that the protection was given not an hour too soon, and that even now a peaceful life is utterly impossible without an adequate police force.
