The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1912. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
In our last issue we published a warning against letting off fireworks in the public streets, which, by the way, is a criminal offence under the Police Offences Act. Such pastime had a fatal result at Gisborne. On Tuesday night a single man named James Burtson, aged 47, a surveyor’s assistant, was thrown from his horse, which bolted owing to the report of fireworks. He died yesterday morning.
The Wellington Post, commenting on the Federation of Labour’s convulsive dying kicks, says : “Still shouting ‘Victory at Waihi,’ the leaders are hopelessly involved in defeat. They may deceive themselves about the issue, and they may delude some of their rank and file, but always the red flag is driven down hill. All the moves of the ‘Reds’ have failed. When the cause of the strike aroused no enthusiasm among the general army of New Zealand workers, various shitts were made to win sympathy, but the ‘heroism’ and ‘martyrdom’ of the voluntary prisoners have not answered expectations. Women have been run conspicuously into the fighting line, and here again the result is a disappointment to the Federation. The last trick is a cry of colour. It is asserted that Maoris have been guilty of strongly assisting to break the strike, and the fugelmen are trying to make some capital out of that allegation. ' The task of the Reds now is to blame anybody and
everybody but themselves for their failure at Waihi. They asked for a test- -and to day the people behold a once boastful body reduced to futile scolding of its opponents. The lion’s skin has indeed been lifted off, and nothing much of the mock-monarch is left except a noise.”
