JETTY AT THE HEADS.
DEPUTATION WAITS ON THE MINISTER.
The question of the erection of a jetty at the Foxton Heads, which has been under consideration for the past two years, and which was again brought forward at the last meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board, has now been advanced a considerable stage. Those residents ot Palmerston N. who make a holiday resort ot the Beach had guaranteed towards the cost ot the jetty, but this not being sufficient it was decided to seek Government aid, consequently Messrs B. Holben and G. Torstonson, of Palmerston North, waited on the Minister for Marine (Hon. F. M. B. Fisher) on Monday, aud placed the situation before him. They pointed out the urgent necessity for the jetty, and stated what the residents were prepared to do themselves, if a grant could be obtained from the Department in the matter of the uecessery rails for the understructuie.
After briefly discussing the position, the Minister remarked that betore he could see his way clear to grant the rails, the plan of the jetty would have to be submitted to the engineer of his Department, Mr Holmes. If any tnodificalioa in the plan was necessary, it would be made to suit the Department, and then the work ot erecting the jetty could be proceeded with. The deputation thanked the Minister for his kindness, and the consideration he had given the matter. Thanks were also tendered to Messrs D. Buick aud D. Guthrie, M’s.P., who introduced the deputaliou. Messrs Holben and Torstonson then waited upon Mr Holmes, the eugtueer, and obtained from him the slight alterations in the plan that were necessary, and also furnished him with the Department’s requirements in connection with a locality plan. Mr Holmes slated that all preliminaries would be fixed up within a week from tiie time he received the revised pi ui. There is thus every reasonable prospect 01 having tue jetty erected by Christmas lime. It only remains for those who have guaranteed the necessary money to forward same to Mr Holben, who has been acting as secretary, and he will hand it over to the Harbour Board, so that lenders may be called straight away. The jetty will be 96 teet long, with a six feet decking, while along one side there will be a three-foot hand-rail. It is estimated the total cost of the jetty will be
