CRICKET.
PRESENTATION OF SHIELD
A complimentary dinner and smoke concert, arranged by the local Cricket Club for the purpose of having the Hall Shield presented, was held in the Manawatu Hotel last night. Mr A. D. Clemett presided and there were about 20 present. The visitors included Messrs Hugh Hall, donor of the Shield, and R. S. Horn, secretary of the Horowhenua Association. A letter was read from Major Burlinson, last year’s president of the Association, regretting that the present state of his health prevented him from being present. Apologies for absence were also received from Mr B. R. Gardener, Mayor of Levin, and several local residents.
After full justice had been done to the good things provided by host Lumsden, the chairman called on Mr Hall to officially hand over the trophy to the Foxton Club, last year's winners. Mr Hall gave a brief history of cricket in the district and congratulated the Foxton Club on Its win. Mr Redgrave, captain of the local club, briefly responded. . During the evening the following toasts were honoured: “The King,” proposed by the Chairman; “Our Guests,” proposed by Mr H. Coley and responded to by Messrs R. S. Horn aud M. Suhan ; “Cricketers, past and present,” Mr W. S. Stewart —'Messrs Redgrave and Clemett; “Kindred Sports,” Mr H. Slunell— Mr H. Hall; “The Press,” Mr L. Freeman —Mr Whiblcy; “Host and Hostess,” Mr C. Hunt —Mr Lumsden. Musical items were contributed by Messrs Cook and Prosser. The singing of “God Save the King” and “Auld Lang Syne,” brought a very enjoyable function to a close.
