SHANNON-FOXTON ROAD.
At Saturday’s meeting ot the Horowhenua County Council, the following letter was read from the cleik of the Manawatu County Council re the Foxton-Shannon road ;—The County overseer has reported that 260 chains requires to be widened and metalled at a cost of and also a length of 240 chains requires leu cubic yards ol metal to the chain, which would bring the total cost up to to put the road in a proper condition to bear traffic. This Council is of opinion that there should be borrowed for the purpose of carrying out this work (if the money can he procured), half to be found by each county, aud a fuilher sum of to be provided out ol rates. The maintenance of the road when put in order to be borne in equal proportion to each local body. If your Council would like to have a further conference on the subject, my Council will be pleased to meet you again, A resolution was adopted to the effect that in the opinion of this Council the claim made by the Manawatu Council for damage stated to be caused by flax traffic from this county over the Shan-uuu-Eoxtou road was unreasonable, but appointing delegates to meet the chairman and Councillors of Manawatu in Palmerston, and, if possible, come to some mutual agreement. The tollowing resolution was also adopted : That in connection with the Manawatu Council’s claim in respect of the FoxtonShauuon road, the chairman be authorised to take all necessary steps such as procuring a rough sketch of the district, showing the ■flax land using the road, sites from which metal aud timber ate procured, or other measures for protecting the interests of the ratepayers.
