A Maori resident writes to tbe Carterton News as under “Sir, —A Maori man went to a kunikuui (dance) the other evening with some Maori ladies. They were re,used four limes admission to the kai loom, although they paid their money like the pakeha. By aud by tbe Maori wis allowed to go in with one of the Maori ladies. The other general of the Hall did uot want the other ladies to go in, but the tallest captain of all said let these Maori men aud women eat, aud they made a good supper. I hope to do the same forjhim some time.”

The October number of the Review of Reviews for Australasia, just to band, contains an excellent character sketch of the late Mr W. H. Judkins, who, since 1905 until his death last month, edited the magazine. An announcement is made that Mr Henry Stead will arrive from j_ondon at the end of the year to lake up the editorship of the paper. Among several striking articles that on what is described as “The Coming Revolution in the British Army,” that is, the use of oil-fuel in place of coal, calls for special mention. The review of the magazines of the mouth is very complete, and gives the reader an excellent survey of current thought and events.

The total number ot mortgages registered in the Dominion liom April rst, T9ll, to March 31st, 1912, was 29,138, and the amount £22,808.367. The races of interest charged ranged from six to twenty per cent. The amount lent at the former interest was £10,554, and at the latter rate a total of only £362 was lent. The largest amount under any one beading was the total of £2,417,666 lent at 4 x /i per cent. The total amount of mortgages released during the year was £15,384,889. The total amount owing on March 31st was £90,138,264. These particulars are contained in a return presented to Pulhmenl.
