A letter was read from Mr Holbeu ou behalf of the section holders at the Beach, objectiug to contribute towards the cost ot the proposed survey, and stating that, if the survey is to be made the Board should bear the expeuse. He also stated that the sectionholders were being rated by the Mauawatu County Council. He pointed out that at a meeting of the Board when the Beach road question was under discussion, Mr J. G. Wilson, chairman of tbe Mauawatu County Council aud a member oi the Board, spoke against the construction of the road ou the ground that the County would uot derive any rates from the sections, it was under these conditions that the tenants agreed to contribute 15s per annum each towards the cost of the road. The County was now attempting to collect rates also, aud against this they wished to enter their protest. The Chairman said that the chairman of the County had certainly stated that no rates would be collected from the tenants, and he did not think it was fair they should now be asked to pay them. Id lact, had the members of the Harbour Board known that it was the intention of tne County to levy rates in respect to these sections they would not have agreed to contribute towards the cost of the road. Mr Wood said that Mr Wilson had distinctly stated that the tenants’ yearly contribution of 15s would be in the nature of a rate, aud that no other amount would be collected from them.
Mr Nash moved, and Mr Wood seconded, and it was carried that the secretary write to the Mauawatu County Council, asking for an explanation as to why this additional amount had been charged to the tenants when it had been stated by the Chairman ot the County Council at a meeting of the Harbour Board that there would be no additional rate, and the section-holders were given to understand that the amount charged, 15s, would cover rates, and interest and sinking fund in connection with the loan.
