The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, October Bth., 1912. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
In the course of a long address at a stone-laying ceremony at the Egmont Box Factory, at Eltham on Saturday, Eord Islington said the dairying industry was the most important one in the world, particularly in Taranaki and this Dominion as a whole. He congratulated the farmers of Taranaki on their advanced ideas in connection with this industry, particularly by co-operation, which was indeed an important thing in any industry. Co-operation should be applied not only as it had been in the past, but also in the case of imports, where it would be found very beneficial in every way. Good means of communication were needed badly, and he would advise light lines such as he had himself seen in other countries. He also advised the use of manures, particularly basic slag, for money spent on fertilisers was well spent. They had good markets —a great one at Home, and a growing one in Canada. He congratulated them on their fine factories, and expressed the great pleasure it gave him to be present to open that one.
