A WAIHI INCIDENT.
“A BROTH OF A BOY.’’
Right throughout last week one prominent contractor at the Waihi mine, who had never concealed his intention ot resuming work when the mine opened, invariably walked unattended from the mine to his home. This man, who is a cheerfully courageous Irishman, was never a member of the Miners’ Union, and never lost a chance ol mischievously poking fun at it. He enjoys being a strike-breaker, and his ancestry is no doubt responsible to some extent for the joyous carelessness with which he hopes someone will “tread on the tail of his coat.’’ When he goes about the streets in the daytime no one says a word to him, though some less surly than others grudgingly return his cheery nod. When he gets out of hearing they will complain bitterly, “There goes Jim , a real good miner. He is the worst of the lot, because he ought to know better than go scabbing on his class.’’
On Saturday night, however, Jim went shopping with his wife, and, presumably because it was night time, the women took to him. They hooted and screamed, and crowded after him, but never a man came forward to have a go at this “broth of a boy.” The police had quite a merry time scattering the crowd. “But it’s poor work quelling these screaming suffragettes,” they complain mournfully.”
