NEWS AND NOTES.

A touching instance of brotherly love was recorded at the Magistrate’s Court (says the Christchurch Press), when a youth was charged with riding a bicycle on the footpath. Tne Chief Detective explained that the young man’s presence in Court was due to a slight misunderstanding. His young brother had been the real offender, and had given his elder brother’s name instead of his own. The youth smilingly acknowledged the truth of this statement, amidst general amusement, and the charge was withdrawn. In this instance, the cherished convention, familiar 10 readers of fiction, of the boy who sacrifices himself to shield the brother was reversed.

Bargain hunters got sadly taken down in a certain town in this Dominion some time since time. An English advt. caught their eye: “Boots at 4s id, overcoats at 7s 1 id, trousers at 2s 3d,” etc., etc., “guaranteed satisfactory by the supplier to the Army and Navy.” A list was compiled and the goods ordered. The parcel came to hand in due time and disclosed an array of second-hand goods which were more or less absolutely worthless to the purchasers. There is a moral to the story, of course, and that is, support local industry.
