THE MOUTOA ROAD.
AGAIN DISCUSSED BY THE MANAWATU COUNTY.
The much discussed question of the carting of flax on the Moutoa road by flaxmillers who are rated in the Horowhenua County Council was again mentioned at Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council by Cr Barber. At last meeting the Clerk was instructed to obtain a list ol the flaxmillers rated in the area, and this was read. The chairman stated that the Horowhenua County Council was opposed to a Commission being set up to enquire into the matter, but in his opinion the Commission would be the best means of settling the question. Other Councillors concurred in this. Cr McKenzie gave it as his opinion that the Manawatu County Council should approach the Horowhenua County Council with a view to remedying the matter, and failing this a Commission should be resorted to. It was finally decided that the Clerk write to the Horowhenua County Council as follows; —“Our overseer has reported to us that to widen and metal 260 chains of the Foxton-Shaunon read would cost There is also a length of 240 chains requiring 10 cubic yards of metal to the chain, bringing the cost to ,£2884, to put the road in order to bear the traffic carried on it. Our Council thinks there should be ,£2,000 borrowed for the purpose of doing this—if the money can be secured —half to be found by each County Council; and a further sum of ,£SOO provided out of rates; the maintenance of the road when put in order to be borne half by each local body. But if the Horowhenua County Council wishes a further conference on the subject, the Manawatu County Council would be very glad to meet again and discuss the matter.”
