GIRL'S STRANGE STORY.
Brisbane, Saturday,
A girl named Birch, aged fifteen years, bad been living with John Woods and his family for tune years at Oakey. William Birch recently came to Oakey and claimed ner as his daughter. The family and the girl refused to recognise the claim- The girl disappeared, but returned next morning and alleged that Birch had waylaid and threatened to shoot her unless she accompanied him. Terrified she consented, and he took her to a place where a large heap of sticks bad been gathered, and compelled her to remove most of her clothes. He then shockingly illtreated her after threatening to roast her on a fire. Ultimately she escaped. The police have found the ashes of a fire containing charred remains and part of a rifle. A doctor has pronounced the remains to be human, and those of a male.
