PUBLIC SERVICE BILL.

The first division on the Public Service Bill in committee was takenshortly before half-past eleven on Thursday evening. It was on an amendment by Mr Davey (Christchurch East). “ That the Post and Telegraph Department should be excluded from the system of control by Commissioners,” and it brought to an end the dreary discussion that had been carried on around this question ever since the Bill wae committed.

Shortly before the bells were rung, Mr Myers announced that he w ould vote against the amendment and this practical indication 01 his independent attitude was received with approving exclamations from the Ministerial supporters. He was one ol the tellers for the Government. The amendment was defeated by 36 votes to 26, a majority of ten lor the Government.
