The services in All Saints’ Church to-morrow, will be at 8 a.m., 11 a.m. and 7 p.tn. An important committee meet* ing of the local Horticultural Society will be held on Wednesday evening next. Try H. The services to-morrow in the local Catholic Church will be conducted at n a.m. and 7 p,m. by the Rev. Father Kelly. The Salvation Army has purchased a section adjoining the Manawatu Hotel upon which it is intended to erect barracks in the near future.

The secretary of the Foxton Horticultural Society acknowledges with thanks donations by the Mayor, A. J. Gibbs Esq., and Messrs Golder and Sons. Miss Marie Baines and her comedy company played the laughable farce, “ Our Mary Ellen,” to a large and appreciative audience at the Coronation Hall last night. Mr W. Gray has donated a further £1 is to the local Horticultural Society for two special prizes of 10s 6d each for the boy and girl gaining most points in the school work class. The services in connection with the Presbyterian Church tomorrow will be conducted at n a.m. by the Rev J. M. Thomson, M.A., and in the evening by Mr G. Huntley. A very enjoyable afternoon under the auspices of the local Presbyterian Ladies Guild, was held at the residence of Mrs Stevenson, Norbiton Road, on Thursday afternoon. The lady members of the local Bowling Club are leaving no stone unturned to make the euchre party and dance to be held in the Town Hall on Friday evening next a huge success, and tickets are selling rapidly.

The services in connection with the local Methodist Church will be held to-morrow in the supperroom of the Town Hall, the preacher being the Rev N. Hyde, of Shannon. A hearty invitation to these services is extended to all. The new Methodist Church, to replace the one destroyed by fire, will be built on the site opposite the Manawatu Hotel, at present occupied by a grain shed, the committee having purchased a section there half an acre in extent.

Mr Climie, civil engineer, who drew up an estimate for a water and drainage scheme for Foxton—which scheme, by resolution of the Council, is to be again submitted to the ratepayers at an early date —will be present at the Council meeting to be held on Monday night to review same. A meeting of the Borough Council will be held on Monday evening, for the purpose of dealing with Cr Greig’s notice of motion re hire' of hall to Horticultural Society and Cr Richmond’s notice of motion to amend the by-law relating to the brick area and to receive a report from Mr C. E. Shaw on the gas works and general. A half acre section, in close proxmity to the Main thoroughfare, which recently changed hands is a striking instance of the increase in land values in Foxton of late years. This section was originally bought for and some little time after was offered to another resident for 10s and refused, and only a week or so back it changed hands again, the price paid being The work of re-building the business portion of the town recently destroyed by fire is going on apace. Mr Thomas Ritutner is making good progress with Messrs Healey and Fraser’s buildings, and also has the concrete floor of Mr Woodroofe’s building laid down. The brick building being erected by Mr W. Nye for Mr A. R. Osborne is also well forward, and the contractor for the erection of business premises for Mr G. H. Stiles has commenced operations.

Mrs Nye, bookseller and statiouer, is at present booking orders for all the Christmas annuals, and all desirous of procuring these numbers are advised to book same without delay. In the Christmas Issue of Holly Reaves will be a presentation plate, a splendid photogravure, after the original painting by Thomas Davidson, entitled “ Nelson’s last signal at Trafalgar—England expects that every man will do his duty.” The picture will be 32 x 20, and is alone worth the price charged lor the Christmas number.

The complaint of Foxton cricketers that (hey have not yet received the Hugh Hall Challenge Shield will soon be dealt with, says the Horowhenua Chronicle. The secretary of the Horowhenua Cricket Association (Mr R. S. Horn) says that the trophy is being repaired, repolished and made to look as handsome as it originally was. A formal matter has also to be attended to, and then the winners for 1911-12 will receive the Shield. Meantime local cricketers are preparing lor the coming season, and a number of interesting matches ate being arranged. with the above the local club has received a letter from Mr Horn suggesting that a social gathering should be held in Foxton at an early date at which the Shield could be presented by Major Burlinson (president of the Association). This suggestion will no doubt be acted upon.

A poll of Mataura ratepayers was taken on Wednesday on a proposal to adopt the system of rating on unimproved value. The proposal was carried by 115 against 95. The death has occurred at Onepuhi near Feilding, of Kerati, a Native reported to be over too years of age. He was one of those shipped as prisoners for the Chatham Islands, but when the ship was outside Wellington and the manacles were taken off he jumped overboard and swam ashore. He escaped over the Tararua ranges to Onepuhi and hid there for some time. Up to the time of his death he was very robust and had hever been ill. So far Mr S. Read is the only candidate defintely announced in connection with the election to fill the vacancy on the Borough Council. Dr. Adams who has been petitioned to allow himself to be again nominated, has not yet given his decision. It is stated that Mr J. F. Reed is also contemplating contesting the seat, but no definite announcement has yet been made by him. In any case it is practically certain that an election will be necessary.

Some representatives of the Trade waited on the Piime Minister yesterday and asked that the issues might be made clearer on the ballot papers at the next licensing election. Mr Massey promised to deal with the matter before next election. The present issues are; “I vote against National Prohibition,” and ‘T vote for National Prohibition.” The deputation’s suggestion was (hat the issues should be: ‘T vote lor National Continuance,” and ‘T vote for National Prohibition,”
