THE RAILWAY ESTIMATES.
AMENDMENT BY MR ROBERTSON.
While the Railway Estimates were being considered by Parliament this week, Mr ]. Robertson (Otaki), moved as an amendment that the item “ Traffic Branch, ,£23,847,” be reduced by £l , as an indication that ‘‘it is the desire ol this House that children under the age ot five years should be carried tree on the railways, and children under 14 years of age at a quarter ol the ordinary second class tare, if and when they are accompanied by parents.” Alter a good deal ot discussion, a division was taken, the amendment being defeated by 36 votes to 24.
