NEWS AND NOTES.
The climax in regard to the extraordinary prices ruling for iat cattle of late was surely reached at the Buruside stock sales on Wednesday last, when a prime bullock topped after animated competition. This is a record price for the yards, having only been equalled once —as far back as 1878, the year of the Clulha floods. Another bullock was also in the race for pride of place, fetching ,£lB 15s. Show cattle have from time to time realised as much as ,£3O to but the claim to honour for a sale in the fat cattle line is undisputed.
A little time ago, says the Standard, Greytown residents were annoyed with the unwelcome attentions ot a “ Peeping Tom.” Now a filthy letter writer is at work. His plan is to sign some resident’s name to his dirty productions, attacking the characters of women. This gives colour, at first sight, to an appearance of genuineness, but second thoughts and a reference of the letter to the party whose name has been forged to it, proves that it is the work o; some poor degenerate. It is a pity the delinquent cannot be discovered. A lew mouths in gaol would teach him a lesson, or quarters in a lunatic asylum would relieve decent society of a noisome pest.
