A movement has been set on fool in Otaki to open up a permanent track across the Tararua Ranges from Otaki to Greytown, and also down to Kaitoke. A practicable track will open up a magnificient mountain playground within easy reach of city as well as country dwellers for week-end trips. The two day walking journey from Otaki to the Wairarapa provides a series of fine panoramas, and charming views of mountain, river and forest scenery. With permanent huts it will be possible for parties to make the trip in much lighter trim than hitherto, and with much lass fatigue.

There appears to be some doubt as to the basis of rating in connection with water and drainage schemes —whether it is on the capital or unimproved values. In order that local ratepayers would know the exact position when the poll in connection with the water and drainage scheme is placed before them it was decided at last night's meeting, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, that the Town Clerk obtain the opinion of the solicitor to the Municipal Association as to whether in the event of a successful poll on the water and drainage scheme the rating would be on the unimproved, annual rental or capital values. At last night’s special meeting of the Council, the newly-elected Councillor, Mr J. Hannah, made the statutory declaration and took his seat. He was formally welcomed by the Mayor, who congratulated him upon his election. He said he felt sure he would give due consideration to all questions brought before the Council and thus be in a position to exercise his vote in whatever way he considered would be in the best interests of the Borough. He asked him to make himself acquainted with the standing orders and by-laws, and thus be in a position to uphold both the dignity of his position and the chair. Cr. Hannah brieflly returned thanks for the welcome accorded him and also for the support received at the poll. He expressed his appreciation of the kind offer of the Mayor of the use of his motor car on polling day and also thanked Crs. Speirs and Coley for their assistance on that day.

The question of Sabbath observance is agitating the minds of certain sections of the Christian church at present throughout the Dominion. Speaking on the subject at All Saints’ Palmerston N. on Sunday, the vicar, Rev Mr Rosber. said : “There never was a time when they needed more to examine the principles of Sunday observance. It the Sabbath had not been set aside rigorously to be kept holy, the idea of God would never have got hold of them at all. The rest of Sunday had been won as a privilege and was now to be protected as a right. Sunday was ordained for : i. Worship. 2. For rest. The vicar said that he had noticed in their midst —perhaps more among the leisured and educated portion of the community, and more especially among the men—the passing of a good tradition, which still, thank God, to a large extent prevailed in the Old Country. He referred to the regular worship of Almighty God in His house on the Lord s Day. In regard to recreation there were three conditions : 1. Worship came first ; 2. That amusement must not give others work; 3 That amusement should not hurt other people’s feelings.”
