YESTERDAY'S ELECTION.

The election of a councillor to fill the vacancy caused by the elevation of Cr Gibbs to the Mayoral chair took place yesterday, and resulted in the return oi Mr J. Hannah, the voting being : Hannah 175 Claris 116 When the poll was declared, at about 7.30 p.m., there was a fair crowd present. The newly-elected councillor briefly returned thanks for the honour conferred on him. He said he had stood in the interest of the small ratepayers; that he had no axe to grind, and would do his best to further the interests of the borough in every way possible. Mr Claris thanked his supporters for voting for him. Although defeated, he intended on some future occasion to again offer his services to the burgesses. On this occasion he was pleased to have had such a worthy opponent, and he took the opportunity ol congratulating him upon his win and wishing him success in his public life.
