SUNDAY HOCKEY AT MOUTOA.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —It seems to me that each ot the correspondents on the above subject are rather wide of the mark. All the writing in the world will not stop the players on Sunday any more than it would stop the game of “two up” on the outskirts of this town on the same day. “Where the treasure is there will the heart be also,” and perhaps “Player” would be just as unhappy at Church as Mr Coatsworth would be on the hockey field. “Happy is that man who condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.” Personally, I should have a bad conscience were I to play hockey on Sunday, but if “Player” has none I can only pity him, and not blame. He is quite correct in his statements re playing in Wellington, and I might mention that last summer cricket was played on Sunday in Victoria Park, Foxton, by seveial young men. I am sure that such worthies as Peter and Timothy would not have been found in such company.—l am, etc., Interested.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Will you kindly allow me, through your paper, to cougtatulate my comrades who so successfully piloted their champion, Mr Hannah, to victory in yesterday’s by-election. It proves to them what a little organising can do. I urge them not to leave off until Foxton obtains not only a Labour Council, but a Labour Mayor. Let the money-bags hold the property, but let Labour deal with the levying of the rates and spending of same. Hurrah for Labour and the wharf boys. More luck next time. Thanking you in anticipation,—l am, etc., Glory Hole.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —The Borough Council, at its last meeting, decided by a majority of five to four, to get a Mr Shaw, from Levin, to report on our gas works. This gentleman was heard to say nearly a fortnight ago that he was coming to Foxton to report on the local gas works. Now, sir, it seems to me some of our Councillors manage matters outside the Council Chambers, engaging the man to come, and then go to the meeting and discuss the matter, and vote on it, when they know it is all fixed up beforehand. Now, fair play is bonnie play. I hold no brief for the gas manager, but I know he has had many years experience in the gas business, and we all know he is an Englishman, and I am sure that bringing Mr Shaw over here to report on our manager’s work is not only sheer waste of the ratepayers’ money, but is like painting a lily, or on a par with getting “Peter the Drainer’’ to report on the Mayor's flax mill. Then, sir, why did the Mayor jump out of his chair and declare the meeting closed just as Cr Adams was going to explain why he was resigning Irom the Council ? The Mayor, alter the meeting, said he knew what Cr Adams was going to say, and determined to block him. This may be alright for the Mayor and one or two Councillors, but it is most unfair to Cr Adams when he wanted to explain, and to the people of Foxton who want to know the reason why he is resigning. However, Messrs Gibbs, Speirs aud Co. can take notice that the reckoning day is coming. Already the hand-writing is on the wall, and they can depend that next April some of them will be weighed in the balance and found wanting. I am, etc.,
Councillor H. W. Richmond,
