LATE GENERAL BOOTH.

The Salvation Army’s solicitor has opened a sealed packet entrusted to him 22 years ago by General Booth, wherein Commissioner Bramwell Booth is appointed his successor. Melbourne, August 23.
Hon. A. Deakin, Leader of the Opposition, received from Mr Bramwell Booth a message expressing deepest sorrow at the general’s demise. The new commander adds: “The general has laid down his sword. Pray tor me.”
Mr Deakin has replied : “The sincerest sympatny is universal here,”
Sydney, August 23. Memorial services for General Booth are being arranged for Thursday next. Adelaide, August 23.
In the Assembly, a motion was moved by the Premier, and seconded by Mr Verran, placing on record high appreciation of General Booth’s worm for humanity. Both the mover and seconder paid tributes to the departed commander. The Premier described him as one oi the greatest moral, religious and social iorces ot the piesent age. Wellington, August 22. His Excellency the Governor cabled to-day to Commissioner Bramwell Booth, London, now head ot the Salvation Army, as follows; “Accept deep sympathy on your great father’s death. His work in New Zealand is ot striking benefit, realised by all. —■ Islington.” In the House of Representatives, the Hon. W. F. Massey (Premier) said he had forwarded a cable to Commissioner Bramwell Booth, expressing regret and New Zealand’s condolence at the death of the General. By his death, said the F.emier, the world has lost one ot its greatest men. He was a philanthropist, a great organiser, and a wonderful man in the widest sense ot the term. By his piety, energy and lorce o: character he has lifted thousands trom a life of degradation. He hoped the great wort initiated by him would be carried ou.
Sir Joseph Ward endorsed what Mr Massey had stated.
