NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Nominations closed to-day to fill the extraordinary vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the retirement ol Mr Stiles as Mayor. Two candidates have been nominated, viz., Mr Holman Claris and Mr John Hannah. The firstnamed is not new to public life, having served on the Mauawatu County Council. He is well-fitted from an administrative point cf view to safeguard the interests of the borough. From what we know of him in other affairs we can recommend him to the burgesses as a man of initiative and thoroughness in any matter he takes in hand. By advertisement Mr Claris informs the public that he will use his best endeavours to see that the affairs of the Council are fairly administered, and that water and drainage and fire prevention proposals will receive his careful consideration and support. We believe this is Mr Hannah’s first attempt in public life. His qualification is residential, and while this precludes him from voting on any loan proposals, it does not deprive him ot the right to assist in the administration of loan moneys. No doubt Mr Hannah will place his views before the public at a later date when the ratepayers will have an opportunity 01 judging ot his fitness for office. The election will take place on Friday next.
