AN APPRECIATION.
(To the Editor)
Sik, —1 sincerely regret to learn by your issue of yesterday that some of my fellow delegates to the Foxtou-Shannon road conference were inclined to take certain remarks of mine other than in the spirit in which they were spoken, i also desire to express my gratitude to youit-ell for publishing them as in the manner expressed and intended. So far as the Manawatu chairman is concerned, no person can realise to a greater degree than 1 do, and have for many years, his ability and wholesoul patriotism, and the difficult and onerous position any of his Council would occupy in filling the chair. At the same time, in all seriousness I tell them, and some other bodies, that they are simply working a valuable and willing horse to death. Most of us will never be missed, but honest workers of his stamp are hard to replace. I am, etc.,
F. W. Venn Shannon, Aug. 23rd, 1912.
