During the course of the Budget debate in the House of Representatives ou Tuesday, Mr Craigie, member lor Timaru, without consulting other members of the now disorganised Opposition, moved the following leasehold amendment ; “That in the opinion of this House, the time has arrived when the national estate in land should be rigidly conserved, and that hereafter no laud of the Crown shall be alienated otherwise than by way ot renewable lease, periodical revaluation of rental.’’ The amendment was seconded by the member for Buller, Mr ColviuMembers of the Opposition exs pressed surprise at Mr Craigie’s initiative. The amendment was lost by 52 to 14. The voting wat as follows: For the amtndmeu, (14) —Colvin, Craigie, Davey, Ell. Forbes, Hindmarsh, Hanau, Isitt, Eaureuson, Parata, Robertson, Seddon, Sidey, Veitch. Against (52) —Allen, Anderson, Atmore, Bell, J. Bollard, R. Bollard, Buxton, Bradney, Brown, Buchanan, Buddo, Buick, Campbell, Clark, Carroll, Coates, Escott, Fisher, Fraser, Glover, Guthrie, Harris, Herdmau, Herries, Hiue, Lang, Dee, McCallum, Macdonald, R. McKenzie, Mauder, Massey, Newman, Ngata, Nosworthy, Okey Pearce, Poland, Russell Scott, Statham, Sykes, G. M. Thomson, Ward, Wilford, Wilson, Witty, Young.
