MONTHS

DECLARED AN HABITUAL CRIMINAL.

At the Palmerston sittings of Supreme Court, before Mr Justice Chapmau, yesterday, Edward Croft pleaded guilty to burglary at Foxtou,

Accused said he committed the offence when under the influence of drink. He would now take out a prohibition order against himself.

Mr Loughnan reported previous convictions on a large number o! charges. Accused said they were all due to drink. His Honour : I think it will be best for you to be put under the charge of the Prison Board. You have not been long in New Zealand, but you have spent most of the time thieving apparently. You will be committed tor six mouths' imprisonment with hard labour, and declared an habitual criminal. After serving the sentence, it will be lor the Board to decide what is to be done for you. You must understand that you will probably remain in prison for some considerable lime before you will be considered tit to be let out.”
