SOCIAL.

A very enjoyable social and competition evening was held in the Presbyterian Hall, under the auspices of the ladies guild on Tuesday evening. All the available space was occupied by an appreciative audience. The Rev. J. M. Thomson, at. a., presided. The programme was opened with a spirited pianoforte duet by Misses Honore and B. Speirs. Mr Wrigley’s glee party, consisting of Mesdames Wrigley and Guilder and Messrs Wrigley, Buglass, Longworth and Guilder made its Erst appearance, and the numbers, “Blow soft ye winds," and ’’Deparuue ’’ were a treat. The singers were unaccompanied and the voices were well balanced giving a most harmonious blending. A feature of the singing was the clear enunciation without which the interpretation is marred. We hope the glee party will favour local audiences with more of this kind of vocal efforts. Both the items were vocuetously encored. Mesdames Guilder and Wrigley created a tine impression with their duet and had to respond. Miss Signal’s number “ Till Dawn,” was much appreciated. Mr Smaile, who has won his way into favour as a vocalist contributed “Vanity” and a “ A summer Shower," Mrs Patterson and Mr Hornblow

created a good deal of amusement wild the humorous duel, “ Money >" 'Matters. The accompaniments were played by Misses Jeuhs and Signal. The guessing competition was won by Miss Hilda Cook and created much interest. The audience had to answer a number of questions, with the names of birds. Refreshments were provided by the ladies, and a very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the National Anthem.
