A BRAVE WOMAN PIONEER.
The Wanganui Herald, referring to the death of Mrs Wallace, mother ol Mrs Alex. Saunders, of Moutoa, which was reported iu there columns in a recent issue, says :
Mrs Wallace, of Ohangai, Taranaki, was one ot the sturdy old pioneers of this coast. Born in Wanganui, she was married iu 1870, and removed to Manulahi iu i«73-
It may be mentioned that the Rev. Mr Hogg, one ot the earliest Presbyterian ministers ot Wanganui, who married Mrs Wallace, hac also christened her in 1851. Mr Hogg Uimself was one ot those courageous clergymen whose duty took them up aud down the coast in dangerous times, and who had, as a rule, to make their long jourueys ou foot. His district extended right up tailawera. Mrs Wallace, with her husband, went into Whakamaru iu 1878. She was the first white vvomau to go into that theu rough back cuutry. Roads were non-existeut there. They made their way with the aid ot pack-horses by suivey tracks, and tor six mouths no white woman was seeu or spoken to. About that lime the bridge over which they had to go was swept away, and had to be replaced by the settlers themselves. Mr and Mrs Wallace shared all the trials and vicissitudes ot pioneer life, aud lived to see the district grow to the improved state in which it is kuown by the present generation : well roaded and bridged aud so brought comparatively near to civilisation. They reared a large tamily of eight sons and three daughters, all ot whom are living, and most of them married. Mr and Mrs Wallace are ot the type ot settler to whom Taranaki in particular and the Dominion iu general owe a great deal. The knowledge that she led a good lile, so spent as to earn the esteem aud respect of all with whom she came in contact, must however, specially iu a case like that ot Mrs Wallace, help at least to solteu the sorrow of those who mourn her departure.
