PLUCK AND PRESENCE OF MINU.
Wairoa, August 16. An instance of bravery on the part of the county roadman at Wairoa has just been made known, after the recovery ot a mate now in the Wairoa Hospital. On the 7th instant the two men, Daniel Murphy and Timothy Hirlthy, were engaged in widening a cutting ou the Waikari inland road, when a slip, comprising fifty yards of earth aud boulders, swept Murphy down nearly three hundred feet into the Waikari river. Hirliliy, who was working above his mate, jumped from the cutting, skidded down the whole distance, and, landing eight yards out in the river, which was fairly flooded at the time, rescued Murphy iu a state ol uucouscionsness. He carried the injured man out, and then collapsed. Murphy was taken to the hospital with a broken jaw, severe bruises and shock. He is now recovering.
