LEVIN-GREATFORD RAILWAY.
At a meeting of the Levin Chamber of Commerce, held on Tuesday evening, the following letter was received from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce ; —Your letter of 27 th ult. was considered by my Council at its meeting yesterday. As the Chamber knows nothing of the circumstances in connection with the proposed Levin-Greatford railway, it was decided to send on your letter to the Railway League for a report. Following my letter of 13th July, the Chairman of the Railway League replies to my communication that the proposed Levin-Greatford railway, being outside their district, they can offer no advice on the matter. If you care to send us full information as to the proposal and its anticipated advantages to the northern pait of the Dominion, the matter will receive due consideration.
The chairman expressed the opinion that full details should be sent to the Auckland Chamber, pointing out particularly how the railway would facilitate railway travelling from Auckland to the south.
The secretary reported th?,. while in Auckland he interviewed the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, and he said ihat they were working hard to get the Auckland-Gisborne railway made, and they did not think u would be advisable to co-operate with this Chamber while that and kindred local ml way matters were occupying their attention. At the same time they would be glad to receive any details on the matter.
Mr Gardener, Mayor of Levin, remarked that the subject would have to be carefully handled. The position was a peculiar one, but rather satisfactory. He did not think any good would result from a deputation to a Minister at the present time. He thought it would be|wise to find out what had been done by Rangitikei and district over the extension and proposed purchase 01 the tramline. He felt confident uulv i~e Government gave the Mauawatu County power to extend the tramway it would not be long before it became Government property, and then a line over the few miles separating Levin and Foxton would become an actuality. It was decided to leave the matter in abeyance at the present time until it was ascertained what Marton was doing.
