NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The newly-installed Mayor, Mr A. J. Gibbs, is to be heartily congratulated upon the very able maimer in which he conducted his first Council meeting last night, and he got through a volume of important business with an expedition which any of his predecessors might envy. He disclosed a knowledge of the standing orders and a grip of the business before the meeting which surprised his colleagues and subsequently won for him their hearty congratulations. If Mr Gibbs can conduct future meetings with the same aptitude and discretion he displayed last night—especially in view of the fact that many contentious and highly debatable subjects were disposed of —it augurs well for a further advance in municipal administration. We wish him a successful term of office.
