Woodward will conduct a service at the Maori Pah at 2.30, when he will be assisted by the Maori clergyman. This will take the form of a memorial service.
At last night’s Council meeting Cr Whibley asked that the Public Works Committee should visit lire corner of Frances and Johnston Streets, with a view to having same kerbed similar to the corner of Johnston and Union Street. The corner at present was dangerous, on account ut vehicles running close to the fence.—lt was decided that' the Committee visit the spot at the first opportunity.
At last night’s meeting the newly-elected Councillor, Mr G. S. Whibley, made the statutory declaration and took bis seat. He was formally welcomed by tbe Mayor, who expressed the hope that he would do bis utmost to preserve order, and also to lurther the interests of the Borough. Cr Whibley thanked the Mayor for his kindly welcome, and said that during the time he occupied a seat at the Council table he would do all in his power to uphold the chair, and would work to promote the welfare of Foxton. The attendauce shield at the local Slate School was wou last week by Standard IV. with 100 per cent. Thomas Rimmer has been appointed agent for the “Diamond” Fire Extinguisher. Everybody should buy one.* The services in St. Mary’s Church to-morrow will be conducted at 8.30 a.m. by the Rev Father Kelly. The services at the local Presbyterian Church to-morrow will be conducted by the Rev J. M. Thomson, m.a. On the fourth page of this issue will be found the report of the case Hamer v. Hartley, heard at Wednesday’s sitting of the local S.M. Court.
There were present at last night’s Council meeting; His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Siiles) and Crs Coley, Stewart, Adams, Gibbs, Richmond and Whibley. The services in All Saints’ Church to-morrow'will be : 8 a.m. Holy Communion, xi a.m. Matins and Holy Communion, 7 p.m. evensong and sermon. Three uniforms, a drum and a music stand, belonging to the local brass band, were destroyed by the recent lire in Main Street, having been stored in Mr Golder’s shop.
A poll of ratepayers of Napier South Town District was taken on Tuesday on a proposal to introduce the system of rating on unimproved values. The result was : For the proposal 115, against 9.
Will the Massey Government wear well, equal say, to the Roslyn Allwool High-grade Clothing and Unshrinkable Underwear “ Delta ” finish ? If so, New Zealand will have reason to be proud of its new Prime Minister.* The services in connection with the local Methodst Church tomorrow morning and evening will be conducted by the Rev. T. Coatsworth, who will take as the evening subject, “The Rost Christ.” A hearty welcome is extended to all. The local Methodist Church committee have not yet definitely decided where they will erect their new building. They have had several offers for the site in Main Street, but no sale has yet been effected. If the reserve on this section is not reached it is possible that the new building will be reerected on the old site. Plans lor a new church in reinforced concrete have been prepared, and an estimate for the erection of same received.
Some time ago the Borough Council invited tenders for the erection of an iron fence in Hall Street, two tenders being received. The acceptance or otherwise of same was held over pending an inspection of same by the Public Works Committee. At last night’s meeting the Mayor reported that the Committee had visited the spot and were of opinion that the lowest of the two tenders was about too high, —lt was decided to do the work by day labour.
At last night's Council meeting no less than three resignations were received, being Irom :he Mayor, the sexton and die ranger. It was resolved to invite applications for the positions of sexton and ranger. In the latter case it was asked if the Council would return the deposit {£i) sent with the application, if he continued the duties until another was appointed.—On the motion of Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Gibbs, it was decided that the deposit be not returned.
The Government has offered and the Hon. Thos. McKenzie has accepted the post of High Commissioner for three years. The successor to Sir William Hall-Jones, received the congratulations of leading members of both sides of the House, when the announcement was made. The Hon. Mr McKenzie’s acceptance of the position involves the resignation of his seal in the House of Representatives, which will necessitate a by-election for the Egmont seat. The Government candidate will beMrC, Wilkinson. Other candidates mentioned are Messrs Dive (defeated by Mi McKenzie), Jennings and Wake.
At a previous meeting of the Council an application was received from the Borough Brass Band for a donation towards their funds. Cr Greig then moved, with a view to getting some return for any money voted, that the Band be asked upon what terms it would play outside the Coronation Hall on Saturday evenings prior to the picture shows commencing. At last night’s meeting a reply was received stating that the band would be pleased to play for five shillings per night, provided passes were issued to the performers or rosper night it no passes were allowed.— As Cr Greig was not present, it was decided to leave the matter in abeyance until the next ordinary meeting.
