THE MAYOR’S RESIGNATION.

TENDERED LAST NIGHT

At last night’s Council meeting the Mayor, Mr G. H. Stiles, tendered his resignation. In doing so he said that no doubt Councillors would agree that the position in which he had been placed through the recent fire was one that did not warrant him in continuing his duties as Mayor of the town. His business had been disorganised and it would mean months and months of hard work to get it again thoroughly reorganised. It would also mean that for some time he would be away from Foxton a good deal and under the circumstances it was only fair both to himself and the ratepayers that he should retire. He trusted they recognised that it was no petty thing, but his only reason for resigning was that he did not fee! fit to do both the Council’s work and his own. There would be no difficulty in getting a successor as there were good men in the Council who were well fitted to occupy the position. Cr Stewart said he was sure he was voicing the opinion of the whole Council in stating that they regretted exceedingly that he should have found it necessary to resign from the position. He had been an ideal Mayor and an excellent chairman.

Cr Gibbs also regretted the resignation and expressed the hope that he would rc-consider same. Cr Adams followed in a similar strain and moved the Council sympathises with the Mayor in the worries that have led up to his resignation and also that their appreciation of his good work be recorded on the minutes. Cr Richmond expressed regret that the Mayor was unable to continue m office for the remainder of the term. The Mayor thanked the Councillors for their kindly remarks, saying that no one regretted his having to lender his resignation more than he did himsell. At some future time, when,he felt that he could give the position the necessary tune, he would be only too pleased to place his services at the disposal of the ratepayers. It was pointed out the procedure in connection with the election of a Mayor-for the balance of a term was tor the Council to hold a special meeting and appoint a successor. Although it was not necessary that a member of the Council should be appointed to the position, this was invariably done. The special meeting to appoint Mr Stiles’ successor will be held ou Tuesday evening next.
