KAPITI ISLAND.

Recently Mr H. G. Kll, M.F., wrote to the Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister, stating that reports had been received that birds had been shot on Kapili Island, one of the bird sanctuaries of the Dominion. Mr Massey has replied stating that Mr J. L,. Bennett, caretaker ot the sanctuary, lias submitted a report showing that no birds have been shot on the part ol the island owned by the Government during the past year, and that an attempt will be made to prevent the destruction oi mutton - birds on the parts of ;he island owned by Maoris. Mr Bennett, in his report, states that during the year he has been in charge nobody has lauded on the Government property with firearms. Some months ago, he heard that Maoris had taken young mutton-birds each season. He spoke to Mr Webber, whose wife owns the Maori part ol the island, and Mr Webber said that he did not favour the taking of mutton-birds. Mr Bennett told him that the practice would not be allowed in future, and that he would do all in his power to prevent it. The caretaker states that both Mr Webber and Mrs Webber are greatly interested in the birds and bush on Kapiti, and that they would resent any destruction. A statement had deeu made that filty mutton-birds were taken oil the island, but such a thing was not possible. He was certain that there had been no poaching while he had been in charge.
