SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

ARNST DEFEATED

When a private message was received locally this morning to the effect that Arnst had been defeated for the world’s sculling championship by Barry, it created a good deal of surprise and nut a little disappointment. To be beaten by four lengths by the English champion whom he so easily accounted for on the Zambesi, is evidence that the sturdy New Zealander had fallen away.

One English critic sounded a warning note as to Arnst’s condition a few days ago when he wrote ;—“ Were arnst nt and well there would be a distinct inclination to plump lor him ; but there is just the question whether in a strange and variable climate he can with impunity shed lorty-tvyo pounds in three months. This, coupled with bis recent indisposition, suggests the possibility of a strain affecting him. Nevertheless, Arnst is showing such form that Barry’s task is exceedingly difficult.” The physical strain and recent illnesses must have found a weak spot somewhere, else the laurels would not have passed so easily to the Englishman. Whilst New Zealand regrets that one of her sons no longer holds the proud title, it still hopes that the exchampion will make another attempt to wrest the coveted honour from the present holder.
