IDEAL ELECTRICAL ACCUMULATOR.
The in volition of the ideal electrical accumulator, which will solve many °1 tho problems of traction, has been announced a dozen times, usually in connection with Iho name of Mr Edison, the famous American engineer. .But dclav and final disappointment have followed upon every announcement, and iho mechanical world has grown tired of waiting for the confrivance that will enable a light “rim-about”- to travel many hundreds of miles on oiu- charge of electricity Uecently the old claim has been renewed on behalf of Professor Hannover, a Danish inventor of proved ability. Tho Professor has long been studying the problem of the storage of electricity, and ho has produced an accumulator which, according to his own estimate, has five times the efficiency of any existing pattern. In other words, tho weight has been reduced 1o one-fifth of what is necessary at the I) resent time, and tho electric motor which depends for its supply of power on an accumulator need no longer be exhausted, like tho army horse, by tho necessity of carrying its own dinner. 'J he important feature of the new invention is .said to be a porous lead alloy, perloratod with millions of microscopic holes. This accumulator will ho fairly expensive, but it will bo invaluable, if its promise is realised, for us© in vehicles, flying ma.chincs. submarine boats and railway ears The prospect that the Danish _ expert offers is very attractive. In a city that is provided with cheap and abundant electricity. as ('hristclmrch soon will be. the charging of the batteries would be a verv easy matter. A simple connection with the’ordinary circuit, would be. malic at a central [lower station, a, garage or a private ear-shed, arid -tho accumulators would drink electricity as a sponge abjorbs water. The running ol a vehicle -n equipped would be merely a matter ol turning a handle similar to ihe one Operated by flic motorniau on a traincar. A petrol famine would not concern the user of the electric roadster at aJI.
