FOXTON DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB.

The first annual general meeting of the above was held in the Town Hall supper room ou Monday evening. The Mayor presided over a large attendance of shooting enthusiasts. Captain Robinson, officer in charge of No. 6 area group was also in attendance. The balance sheet of the Foxton. section of the Himatangi Defence Rifle Club was read and adopted. The Mayor addressed those present on the advantages of rifle shooting and hoped the new club would have a useful and prosperous career. He regretted, owing to business engagements, that he would be unable to fill the office of first president of the club. A large number of members were then enrolled and Captain Robinson addressed those present and explained the routine of Defence Rifle Clubs as laid down by the Defence Act. He also explained various clauses of the Act which were not clearly understood by some of the members. The financial position was then discussed and it was unanimously decided to hold a social function at an early date for the purpose of augmenting the funds. The following officers were then duly elected ; President, Mr Geo. O. Barber; vice-presidents, Messrs G. H. Stiles and C. Rand ; hon. secretary, Dr. Adams ; committee, Messrs Boyes, Gillespie, R. Ash more, K. Furrie, and R. Rand.

It was decided to make the annual subscription 10s for the first year. It was pointed out that a reduction would be made at a later stage, a’ier the initial expenses had been liquidated, to 2s 6d per year. The secretary was iustructed to write to the Defence Department asking for a grant ior the purpose of putting the range in order. It was also decided to apply to the Council for a donation of ,£5 for the same purpose. It was decided to transfer the Foxton members ot theHimatangi Rifle Club to the Foxton Club. The secretary requested all members who desired to purchase M.L,.E. rifles on deferred payment from the Defence Department to hand iti their names Other matters of minor importance were discussed and the meeting terminated with the usual compliment to the chair.
