FIRE PREVENTION.
MR BARNARD VISITS FOXTON.
Yesterday morning Mr Barnard, superintendent of the Palmerston Fire Brigade, visited Foxton at the invitation of the Borough Council, for the purpose of meeting members of the Council, to discuss matters in connection with the proposal to establish a fire brigade locally. Mr Barnard and the Mayor and Councillors had an informal discussion m the Council Chamber after which a tour of inspection of the borough was made. The artesian wells on the Hemp Process Company’s property and those at Messrs Coley and Bock’s mills were visited and Mr Barnard also inspected the river. Me said the only scheme he could recommend for Foxton was one similar to that of Blenheim, where they had pipes laid where required and the water was pumped into these by means of an engine on the river bank. A scheme of this description would cost somewhere between
and The only alternative was the construction of sumps iu the Main Street and the use of a manual engine, but this latter scheme he would not recommeud.
Mr Barnard will furnish a written report which will be considered by the Council at a meeting to be called for the purpose, '
