NATIVES AND LIQUOR.
Mrs Campbell and Wm. J. White appeared before Mr A. D. Thomson, at the Palmerston Court, yesterday, on a charge of having supplied a Maori, Hingawaka Tuparoa, with liquor at Foxton on April 27th and 29th. Mr Innes appeared for defendants, and Sergeant Willis prosecuted.
Teira Hotereni, the first witness called, stated that he was a native, residing at Motuiti. On April 27th he went into Foxton, accompanied by Hingawaka and others. They visited Whyte’s hotel, and had six drinks altogether. These were supplied by Mrs Cambwell, and were consumed iu the hotel. Hingawaka also asked for four bottles of liquor, which were supplied. Tbese Hingawaka put in his bag, and they left the hotel almost immediately. Witness knew Mr White, but he was not present at the time. The liquor was afterwards taken to Motuiti.
To Mr Innes: He knew Mr Whyte well, and also his hotel. It was about 12.30 when he went there, but did not know at what time they left. During their stay at the hotel —the only one they visited —the bottles were not opened. At their arrival at the Motuiti pah, the bottles were put into Hingawaka’s whare. To Sergeant Willis : On April 29th, witness, Hingawaka and two others again went to White’s hotel at Foxton, and again consumed drink there. As on the previous occasion he did not see Mr White. This time eight bottles of liquor—whiskey, schnapps and beer —were purchased by Hingawaka (supplied by Mrs Campbell) and taken to Motuiti. The bottles (produced) were similar to those taken fr»m the hotel. One (a whiskey flask) he thought came from Lumsdeu’s hotel. To Mr Innes : Witness visited Luiusdeu’s hotel, to get Mrs
To Mr Thomson ; When Mrs Campbell brought the bottles to Hingawaka she told him to put them iu the bag at once. This witness did.
Mahauariki, an old native, gave coiroboralive evidence. He recognised Mrs Campbell as the lady who supplied the drinks, and the liquor that was taken to the pah. After hearing farther evidence Mrs Campbell was lined £s each on the two charges with costs £2 17s 6d. The decision against White was reserved. Mr Innis raising a point that he was not liable as he had not authorised the sale, and was away at the time. He quoted a decision of Mr Dyer, S.M., under similar circumstances.
