SOCIAL.
A very enjoyable social was held in the Presbyterian Hall on Thursday night aud, despite the inclement weather, the building was comfortably filled with an appreciative audience. The programme included instrumental and vocal items, aud a side-splitting and novel competition entitled “Are you there?”—the principal actors in the last mentioned being Messrs Claris and Whibley. The Rev J. M. 'Thomson, m.a., presided, and at the conclusion’ made flattering reference to the items submitted, and on behalf of the management committee thanked the contributors. He stated that the ladies requested him to mention that they would put on a social in a mouth’s time. The tollowing ladies and gentlemen contributed items : Mesdames Boyes, Patterson, Misses Jeuks, Barber, Signal, Messrs Buglass, Jenks, W. Cook, Claris, Hollington, Hornblow, bmaileand Whibley. The items were all deservedly appreciated —in fact it was one el the best concert programmes that has been submitted lor some considerable time past. A new vocalist to a local audience in the person of Mr Smaile, of Himatangi, received an ovation for his fine rendering ot “Roses.” and he responded to an undeniable encore with “An Irish Maid.” We hope to hear this singer again at future concerts. Mi«s Jenks and Mrs Boyes played the accompaniments. The ladies ot the congregation supplied an abundance of refreshments. The function was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.
