ENTERTAINMENTS.
SKATING. There was a moderate attendance at the municipal skating rink on Tuesday evening. The attendance ot late, owing perhaps to the very inclement vveatner, has fallen off considerably since the rink was first opened. This very fascinating winter pastime has gained popularity in almost every town in the Dominion, and in other cities the management has already run ■‘competition nights” and -“carnivals," which have proved, from a financial point of view, very successful. As we have previously pointed out in these columns, it would be an excellent idefl if the management put something ot this sort on here. If it can be done successfully in other places there is no reason why it cannot be done here. The manager, Mr Alf, Fraser, has conducted the rink since its opening in a very creditable manner, and its popularity is mainly due to his very excellent management. If the manager wishes to maintain that popularity he ought to boom it a little, because patrons who have attended all the season want something of interest to finish the season, and, further, it is not fair to deny them something out of the ordinary, so that they could prove their skill on the rollers. Unless something is done to create tresh interest it will soon be a “thing of the past.” Seeing that the rink is a municipal affair surely the Council could run a carnival on moderate lines, a canvass could be made for trophies, and as usual in such cases, would meet with splendid support, and with the skaters and spectators fees, would prove an excellent investment. The rink will be open at 7.30 this evening.
PICTURE SHOW. The pictures ror Saturday will be found quite as interesting and realistic as previous programmes. There is a very pretty natural history film ot “Butterflies,” showing many different specimens, some being ot great beauty. A wonderful scenic entitled “Ocean, Thou Mighty Monster,” shows views ot the mighty deep in all its beautiful, yet terrible Another scenic, “Berne,” and still another, “Morocco,” are full of scenes of glorious country. A powerful drama by the Thanfiauser Company, “As it was in the Beginning,” is a subject that cannot fail to interest all who see it. Other Ji .mas are : “The Just Verdict,” “Tue Blacksmith,” and “The Romance of Rio Grande,” all good subjects clearly portrayed. A long comedy entitled “Baby’s Bride” is splendidly acted, and full of pretty scenes. The comics are “The Bear Hunt” and “Rady Smokers in Secret.” If you see the lady smokers you are sure of a good laugh.
