LEVIN-GREATFORD RAILWAY.
AND WELLINGTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The Wellington Chamber of Commerce yesterday received a letter from the secretary of the Lcvm Chamber asking for cooperation in an effort that was being made to secure the construction of the Leviu-Greatford railway. The writer pointed out that if this line were constructed, the journey between Auckland and Wellington would be shortened by about one hour and a half. It would also open up a considerable area of good settlement land. The chairman (Mr A. E. Mabin) thought that the district mentioned was fairly well served by present railways—the Foxton district from Levin, and the other side from Greatford.
Mr A. S. Biss pointed out that the scheme would cut out Palmerston Noith, the best town ou the line, and the junction with the Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay, ‘'They’ll never cut out Palmerston,” he said. ‘‘The Main Trunk line will never pass by Palmerston.” Mr Leigh-Hunt thought that the Sansou-Greatford tramway extension was a more worthy object. The meeting decided that the time was not ~ t ;po. -.a asking the Government to spend the sum of ,£250,000 on the construction of a railway line between Levin and Greatford, via Foxton.
