Two burglars were captured in an Auckland hotel on Wednesday night. The burglars were powerfully built men, Forest Kirchirtz and Charles Reynolds, a German and Canadian respectively.

A mild sensation was created in Wanganui the other uight over a burglary scare. A telegraph messenger, passing Gibson and Paterson’s grocery shop, noticed a taint light at the rear of the shop. At the Napier Supreme Court, the trial of Kuku Matene Ropeha, charged with manslaughter by causing the death of two natives through the overturning of a motor car, alleged to have been recklessly driven by him at Waipawa, concluded. The jury brought in a verdict of guilty and added a rider that the law should be amended by making ti illegal for any person to drive a motor car who has uot passed a stringent examination as to fitness. Prisoner was sentenced to twelve mouths imprisonment on the Waipa prison farm. An Oamaru lady—of course, she was young ! —had a novel experience the other day. Having washed her hair, she tried to take the water out of it by running it through the family wringer. She turned the handle till her head and the rubbers came into contact, the hair in the meantime clinging close to the latter. She found it impossible to extricate herself from the entanglement, and cried with a loud voice for assistance. First aid was forthcoming, but even then there was a difficulty in separating the hair from its mixup in the wringer.

In his lecture on “New Zealand Agriculture,” iu Wellington on Tuesday night, Premier Mackenzie said New Zealand had 67,000,000 acres of land of all descriptions. Growing disinclination to pay the levy of 2s per week towards the Waihi and Reefton strike fund is being evidenced amongst members ot the Auckland Tramway Union, As a matter of fact, it was gathered irom several of the men in the course ot conversation, that the first levy collected about a week ago was evaded by a large percentage of the members.

At a meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Union on Thursday night, three Shannon players, who were oidered off the field by the referee during the progress ot the Eevin-Shanuon match, played last Saturday, were dealt with. The ueleree stated that the men ordered off for having used obscene and filthy language and threatening behaviour towards himself. One of the offenders was suspended for two years, and prohibited from attending matches during that period, and the other two were disqualified for life. The sentences imposed are somewhat severe, but young men who can’t control their tempers and tongues, should not attempt rugby. What aggravated the present charges was the fact that young women were playing hockey in an adjoining paddock. It is questionable whether the police have not power to deal with such cases.
