CRICKET.
After being defeated by both Lancashire and Surrey, in each case by stualll margins, the Australians commenced their first test game against Fnglana’s picked eleven. McLaren, Mayue, Minnett and Webster were omitted trora the louring team. The weather for the commencement of the match was showery, but that the pilch was in good order is shown by Lugland winning the toss and electing to bat. An excellent start was made, the score reaching 112 before 1 the first wicket fell. Rain interfered with play somewhat, several adjournments having to be made. When the stumps were drawn the score stood at 2ii lor the loss of lour wickets. Hobbs, oi Surrey, who is recognised as one of the world's best batsmen at the present lime, played a very line innings oi 107. For the second day the weather was cloudy and misty and the wicket soft. Flay was commenced but slumps afterwards had to be drawn on account ol the rain. The score then stood at 241 for four wickets.
