SUBSIDIES OR LOCAL FLEETS!

A very interesting debate on the subject of “Subsidies v. Local Fleets ; Which would be More Advantageous to the Empire ?” took place at Thursday’s meeting of the Foxton I.iterary and Debating Society. The Rev. J. M. Thomson, M.A., led iu tavour of local fleets and Mr Claris championed the present system of monetary subsidies and was ably assisted in this connection by Dr. Mandl. At the close of the debate a vote was taken on the merits of the debate, which favoured that of local fleets.

It was decided to make the next meeting one that should provide attractive to both sexes, viz., a breach ot promise case. The details were left In the hands of a sub-committee. It was stated that Mr Jas. Stevens has consented to deliver a lecturette, and it was also decided to ask Mr R. McNab to deliver a lecture during the session. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
