FOXTON S EXAMPLE.
At Wednesday’s meeting of the Te Aroha Borough Council, Cr. W. E. Barnard introduced the question of erecting a municipal hall in that town. He said he bad recently paid a short visit to Foxton, where he had resided before coming to settle in Te Aroha. On returning to Foxton he was struck with the very fine municipal hall erected in a prominent part of the town. He made enquiries trom the mayor and town clerk as to the cost of the building, how it is run, and if it paid its way. He tound that the council rau its own picture show, and for the five and a half mouths the hall had paid handsomely, the sum of £'364 7s rod being carried to general credit account. The haU was most sumptuously arranged, aud would seat 700 people. The building cost £2,200, aud everything, including the machinery for <=the picture shows, eugiue, etc., totalled ,£3,400. A special loan was sanctioned by the ratepayers, and everything in connection with the venture had proved a great success. He had brought back particulars as to prices, etc. He was aware that the local syndicate was being arranged to build a new hall, aud he declaimed any attempt to put a chain on their wheels. In view of the productiveness of the municipal hall he thought the couucil should go into the matter carefully, aud if they thought it worth while, to act promptly. He suggested that a committee be set up to go into the matter. After discussing the subject a committee was set up to inquire aud report at next meeting.
