Speaking to a repeater the Minister said that the law to-day required that methylated spirit should be sold in a form unfit for human consumption. This provision it was thought sufficient to prevent even the most degraded degenerate from taking it, still the fact that methylated spirit was charged with an offensive drug did not appear to achieve the purpose aimed at. At present spirits ot wine as it is imported is diluted or charged with wood naptha and mineral naptha. Roughly, the process includes the mixture of roo gallons ol spirits of svine with rr gallons of wood naptha and three pints of mineral naptha. The department now proposes to mix or dilute ioo gallons of methylated spirits of wine and n gallons of wood naptha and four pints of pyridine. “When that is done,” said Mr Eaureusou, “it will render methylated spirit, absolutely unpalatable to even the most degenerate beast iu the community.”
